چکیده

We report the first X-ray detection of the radio pulsar PSR B1757−24 using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We detect point-source emission at the pulsar position plus a faint tail extending nearly 20 east of the pulsar, in the same direction and with comparable morphology to the radio tail. Assuming the point-source X-ray emission is magnetospheric, the observed X-ray tail represents only ∼0.01% of the pulsar’s spindown luminosity. This is significantly lower than the analogous efficiencies of most known X-ray nebulae surrounding rotation-powered pulsars. Assuming a non-thermal spectrum for the tail photons, we show that the tail is unlikely to be emission left behind following the passage of the pulsar, but rather is probably from synchrotronemitting pulsar wind particles having flow velocity ∼7000 km s. We also show that there must be a significant break in the tail synchrotron spectrum between the radio and X-ray bands that is intrinsic to the particle spectrum. No emission is detected from the shell supernova remnant G5.4−1.2. The upper limits on remnant emission are unconstraining. Subject headings: pulsars: general — pulsars: individual (PSR B1757−24) — ISM: individual (G5.4−1.2) — X-rays: general

X-ray Detection of PSR B1757−24 and its Nebular Tail

We report the first X-ray detection of the radio pulsar PSR B1757−24 using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The image reveals point-source emission at the pulsar position, consistent with being magnetospheric emission from the pulsar. In addition, we detect a faint tail extending nearly 20 east of the pulsar, in the same direction and with comparable morphology to the pulsar’s well-studied radio ...

Proper Motions of Psrs B1757−24 and B1951+32: Implications for Ages and Associations

Over the last decade, considerable effort has been made to measure the proper motions of the pulsars B1757−24 and B1951+32 in order to establish or refute associations with nearby supernova remnants and to understand better the complicated geometries of their surrounding nebulae. We present proper motion measurements of both pulsars with the Very Large Array, increasing the time baselines of th...

Resolution of the Age Discrepancies in Pulsar/snr Associations

Pulsars associated with supernova remnants (SNRs) are valuable because they provide constraints on the mechanism(s) of pulsar spin-down. Here we discuss two SNR/pulsar associations in which the SNR age is much greater than the age of the pulsar obtained by assuming pure magnetic dipole radiation (MDR) spin-down. The PSR B1757−24/SNR G5.4−1.2 association has a minimum age of ∼40 kyr from proper ...

Discovery of an X - ray Nebula associated with PSR J 2124 − 3358

We report the discovery of an X-ray neb-ula associated with the nearby millisecond pulsar PSR J2124−3358. This is the first time that extended emission from a solitary millisecond pulsar is detected. The emission extends from the pulsar to the northwest by ∼ 0.5 arcmin. The spectrum of the nebular emission can be modeled by a power law spectrum with photon index of 2.2 ± 0.4. This is inline wit...

Searches for diffuse X - ray emission around millisecond pulsars : An X - ray nebula associated with PSR J 2124 − 3358

We report on diffuse X-ray emission associated with the nearby solitary millisecond pulsar PSR J2124−3358 detected with XMM-Newton and Chandra. The emission extends from the pulsar to the northwest by ∼ 0.5 arcmin. The spectrum of the nebular emission can be modeled with a power-law of photon index 2.2 ± 0.4, in line with the emission originating from accelerated particles in the post shock flo...
